Rule-based routing
The Auto Switch profile matches URLs to profiles, so your ProxyOmega residential IP applies only to the domains that need it while the rest stay direct and fast.
Proxy SwitchyOmega is the go-to Chrome and Edge extension for saving proxy profiles and switching between them in a click. This guide covers creating a ProxyOmega proxy profile, entering the server and port, adding username and password authentication, and applying the change through SwitchyOmega's staging system. Steps match the current extension interface.
Proxy SwitchyOmega is a browser extension for Chromium-based browsers that stores multiple proxy configurations as named profiles and lets you switch the active one from a toolbar menu. It is the successor to the older Proxy Switchy and SwitchySharp extensions and remains one of the most widely used proxy managers for account work, scraping-with-a-browser, and QA.
Its standout feature is the Auto Switch profile, a rules engine that picks a proxy based on the URL you visit. You can send one set of domains through a residential proxy, another through a direct connection, and let SwitchyOmega decide automatically. For simpler needs, a single Proxy Profile that you toggle on and off is enough. Profiles can also reference each other, so an Auto Switch rule can point at a named Proxy Profile you defined earlier, which keeps large setups tidy.
SwitchyOmega uses a staging model for edits. When you change a profile you are editing a draft; nothing takes effect until you click Apply Changes. That trips up first-time users who navigate away and wonder why their proxy did not activate, so it is worth remembering as you follow the steps below. The extension also runs entirely on your device, so your credentials stay local rather than being sent to any third-party service.
SwitchyOmega gives you the switching logic; ProxyOmega gives you the residential exits. Together they let a single browser present many different real-looking IPs, chosen per site or per task, without ever touching system network settings.
The Auto Switch profile matches URLs to profiles, so your ProxyOmega residential IP applies only to the domains that need it while the rest stay direct and fast.
Save one profile per country by changing the username suffix, then switch from US to DE to GB in a single click for testing localised content or pricing.
Switching to the Direct profile takes you back to your real connection immediately, which makes it easy to confirm whether a block is tied to the proxy IP or the account.
Collect your credentials from the ProxyOmega dashboard: your username plus any targeting parameters, and the account API key which is used as the proxy password. Then configure a new profile.
Because every ProxyOmega port serves HTTP, HTTPS, and SOCKS5 at once, switching protocol in SwitchyOmega never means changing the port; you only change the Protocol dropdown. In Chrome and Edge, the extension platform does not forward SOCKS5 username and password credentials reliably, so choose HTTP when you authenticate with a password. If you must use SOCKS5 in a Chromium browser, authenticate by IP whitelist instead of a password. HTTP is the pragmatic default for almost all SwitchyOmega setups.
Choose the plan by what you are targeting rather than the protocol.
| Workload | Plan | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Rotating IPs for general browsing | Budget Unlimited | New residential IP per port; -country-xx targets a country |
| Faster, heavier sessions | Premium Unlimited | Higher-speed residential on premium.proxyomega.com:8000 |
| City, state, or ASN targeting, pay per GB | Platinum | Precise geo control on platinum.proxyomega.com:20228 |
| Mobile carrier IPs | Mobile | Real 4G/5G IPs on mobile.proxyomega.com:20229 |
| A stable, non-rotating IP | Static ISP | Fixed US IP (Dallas) on isp.proxyomega.com, ports 30000-30099 |
If SwitchyOmega does not route as expected, the cause is almost always the staging system, the credentials, or the username suffix. Check these before anything else.
A 407 is an authentication failure. Make sure the password is your dashboard API key rather than your login password, and that the username's targeting parameters are valid, since an unsupported parameter also returns 407. If you use IP whitelisting, note that once any IP is whitelisted only those IPs can connect, so requests from an address that is not listed are refused outright.
SwitchyOmega stages edits. If your profile seems ignored, return to the options page and click Apply changes, then reselect the profile from the toolbar. Editing without applying is the most common reason a proxy appears not to work.
In Chrome and Edge the extension cannot pass SOCKS5 credentials, which can trigger repeated auth prompts. Switch the profile's Protocol to HTTP, or use IP whitelisting so no interactive login is needed.
